Peterborough is a destination for people seeking a varied and unusual shopping experience. Within the downtown, there are a large array of unique shops, including fine clothing stores, gift and antique shops, a kitchen store, card shops, art galleries and one of New England’s finest bookstores.

For a small town in southwestern New Hampshire, Peterborough offers a surprising number of restaurants from fast food to many fine dining restaurants offering a large variety of cuisines. So if you’re in the mood to join friends for breakfast, lunch or dinner there are numerous choices.

CULTURE

Historic and beautiful Downtown Peterborough is the home of the Monadnock Center for History & Culture featuring a wide variety of interesting talks and concerts.

Peterborough Players is the oldest professional operating summer theater in the country.

The MacDowell Colony, founded in 1907, is the oldest artists’ colony in the United States.Thornton Wilder wrote Our Town in 1933 while in residence at the MacDowell Colony.

The nationally acclaimed Monadnock Music and Apple Hill Chamber Music offer some of the best classical music programs outside of Boston or New York.

Peterborough is also home of the country’s first free public library.

RECREATION

The Monadnock Region is a year round recreational playground.  Peterborough offers two beautiful lakes, each with a public beach and boating access. A picturesque six-mile walking/biking path winds through downtown and there is access to hundreds of miles of scenic hiking trails. Within a short distance of Peterborough, there are five golf courses including the 100 year old Hill Top Golf Course.

HOSPITAL

Peterborough is fortunate to be the home of Monadnock Community Hospital, a full service hospital and the Bond Wellness Center with a first-class fitness facility and extensive rehabilitation department. The hospital has recently expanded and updated their Emergency, Surgery and Oncology Departments. With a medical staff of over 100 full-time and courtesy medical staff, including some of the finest specialists in New Hampshire, Monadnock Community Hospital is considered one of the best small hospitals in New England.
